Chehalis began as a settlement around a warehouse, beside a railroad track, in 1873, when the Northern Pacific Railroad built northward from Kalama to Tacoma. By 1874, a store was added to the warehouse, and several houses were constructed. The new town was first named Saundersville, for S.S. Saunders, on whose donation land claim it was founded. In 1879, the name was changed to Chehalis.
In 1986, a non-profit organization formed the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum. A group of local citizen’s goal was to restore a 1916 logging locomotive that had been placed in a Chehalis park, thirty years earlier. Early the following year, the restoration began, and over the next two years, several railroad cars were acquired. When all the restoration was completed, operations began in the summer of 1989, over a section of the former Milwaukee Road track, in the Chehalis-Centralia area.
Just off I-5, at exit 77, in Chehalis, is the Veterans Memorial Museum. The museum began in 1997, in a store front, before it moved to its present site. It has hosted many events, throughout the years, and in recent years hosted the travelling Vietnam Wall.
