Named after David Shelton, a delegate to the Territorial Legislature, the town was originally known as Sheltonville, in the later 1800s. Shelton was designated as the County seat in 1888, and was incorporated in 1890.

Shelton’s early commerce consisted primarily of logging, and lumber, farming, dairying, and ranching, as well as oyster cultivation. Without question, logging, and lumber milling, have been the economic foundation of Shelton.
