Tumwater was founded next to the falls of the Deschutes River, at the south end of Puget Sound, as New Market, in 1846, by a group of pioneers, led by Michael Simmons, and George Bush. It was the first American settlement on Puget Sound.

It lies near where the Deschutes River enters Budd Inlet, the southernmost point of Puget Sound. It has a population of around 12,698.

The Tumwater School District is home to two high Schools, and several Elementary, and Middle schools.

The City has two Museums, The Crosby House, and The Henderson House. Tumwater is, also, the home of The Olympic Flight Museum, dedicated to the preservation, and flying of vintage aircraft.

The City boasts several Parks, and trails, including the 85 Acre Pioneer park, that has a baseball field, two softball fields, three soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, play toys, and trails, with access to the Deschutes River.

The Tumwater Falls are a series of cascades on the Deschutes River .The Falls created an impassible barrier to salmon until 1952, when a fish ladder was built to provide salmon access to the newly constructed fish hatchery, located immediately above the falls.
